Codeium

Codeium was a free AI-powered code completion and chat tool founded in 2022 by Varun Mohan and Douglas Chen (MIT alumni and founders of GPU startup Exafunction). It distinguished itself by offering truly unlimited AI code completion at no cost to individual developers — a direct counter to GitHub Copilot's paid model — and quickly amassed over 700,000 active developers and enterprise clients including Zillow, Dell, and Anduril. Processing more than 100 billion tokens daily by mid-2024, Codeium supported 70+ programming languages across 40+ IDEs (VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim, Emacs, Vim, Eclipse, Jupyter, and more), with chat, semantic search, and context-aware autocomplete all available for free.

In November 2024 Codeium launched the Windsurf Editor — a VS Code fork it called "the first agentic IDE" — built around Cascade, an AI system capable of flow-aware multi-file editing, terminal command execution, and real-time codebase indexing. The company surpassed $100M ARR in four months and 1 million developers by April 2025, then rebranded fully from Codeium to Windsurf. It raised $243M standalone across a $25M Series A (Greenoaks, 2022), $65M Series B (Kleiner Perkins, Jan 2024), and $150M Series C at a $1.25B unicorn valuation (General Catalyst, Aug 2024).

In July 2025, after an OpenAI acquisition deal collapsed over Microsoft IP disputes, Google hired the founding team in a $2.4B licensing deal. Cognition AI (makers of Devin) simultaneously acquired the remaining company for ~$250M. On June 2, 2026, Cognition rebranded Windsurf as Devin Desktop, replacing the Cascade agent with Devin Local and adding an Agent Command Center for multi-agent orchestration. The codeium.com domain now redirects to devin.ai.

Codeium launched with a genuinely free tier for individual developers — unlimited code completions, chat, and search across 70+ languages and 40+ IDEs with no time limit or credit cap. Enterprise plans (custom pricing) added on-premises deployment, SOC 2 compliance, SSO, and zero code retention.

After launching the Windsurf Editor in November 2024, the company introduced paid tiers: Free ($0) with unlimited Tab autocomplete and a light agent quota; Pro ($15/month, later raised to $20/month in March 2026) with full model access, standard refreshing agent quota, and Cascade; Teams ($30/user/month); and Enterprise ($60/user/month) with SSO, 1,000 prompt credits, and enhanced security.

Following Cognition AI's acquisition and the June 2026 rebrand to Devin Desktop, pricing is now managed under Cognition's Devin plan structure: Free ($0), Pro ($20/month), Max ($200/month), Teams ($80/month + $40/seat), and Enterprise (custom). The codeium.com/pricing URL now redirects to devin.ai/pricing.
