DAX Copilot

DAX Copilot is the enterprise ambient AI documentation platform originally built by Nuance Communications as Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX), and now sold by Microsoft under the unified name Microsoft Dragon Copilot after merging with Dragon Medical One in March 2025. It listens to multi-party, multilingual patient-clinician conversations and converts them into structured, specialty-specific clinical notes, going beyond note-taking with coding suggestions, referral letters, after-visit summaries, and cited answers pulled from trusted internal and external medical sources.

Unlike most ambient scribes, Dragon Copilot offers distinct, role-based experiences: physicians get documentation, order capture, and in-workflow Q&A; nurses get ambient flowsheet charting through Epic Rover to cut end-of-shift documentation; and radiologists get a desktop companion for PowerScribe One that accelerates report creation and summarizes prior studies. A Dragon Copilot Developer Kit lets Microsoft partners embed the technology directly into their own EHRs and health-tech products, and an open marketplace lets health systems add third-party AI apps and agents from partners like Regard, Canary Speech, and OpenEvidence directly inside the interface.

Built on Microsoft Azure and deeply embedded in Epic (plus athenahealth, MEDITECH, Oracle Health, and 200+ EHRs via Dragon Medical One), DAX Copilot is used by more than 100,000 clinicians across 600+ health systems in nine countries, including named deployments at Mount Sinai Health System, Tampa General Hospital, Intermountain Health, and Cooper University Health Care. Customers report time-in-note reductions in the 27-50% range and multiple added patient appointments per clinician day, backed by HITRUST and SOC 2 Type II certification.

Microsoft acquired Nuance Communications for roughly $19.7 billion in 2022, inheriting Dragon Medical One and DAX Copilot as the foundation of its healthcare AI strategy under Corporate VP Joe Petro and Global Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Rhew. There is no public self-serve pricing or free trial; access is sold through Microsoft sales or authorized Cloud Solution Provider resellers, typically as an enterprise contract, though Microsoft has also piloted a lower-cost "Physician Practice" license aimed at smaller 5-50 clinician offices.

Microsoft does not publish self-serve pricing for DAX Copilot / Dragon Copilot; access is sold through Microsoft sales or authorized Cloud Solution Provider resellers, and pricing has varied significantly by channel and date. For years, authorized resellers commonly quoted $369-$830+ per provider per month plus a one-time setup fee (often around $650-$700), depending on contract size and minimum term. In a May 2026 marketplace restructuring, Microsoft published tiered list pricing including a Flex plan at roughly $604.80 per user per month (base license plus pay-as-you-go ambient use) and a higher uncapped Per-User tier around $1,512 per user per month (itself a 57% cut from a prior list price). A lower-cost "Physician Practice" license aimed at 5-50 clinician offices was briefly offered via the CSP channel at roughly $150-$160 per user per month before reaching end-of-sale on May 1, 2026. Large health systems negotiating volume, multi-year contracts frequently report effective rates well below these list prices.
