JetBrains AI Assistant is the official AI-powered coding companion built directly into JetBrains IDEs, including IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, GoLand, Rider, CLion, and more than 20 development tools in total. Rather than being a bolt-on plugin using a generic text model, it is built on top of JetBrains' existing static-analysis engine, the same technology that powers refactoring and code inspection, letting it understand a codebase at a semantic level, including import graphs, class hierarchies, and call chains, rather than just the currently open file. This deep integration makes it especially strong for Java and Kotlin developers, since IntelliJ's analysis engine was originally built for JVM languages.

The platform combines real-time inline code completion with an AI chat panel and Junie, JetBrains' autonomous coding agent, all sharing a single subscription and credit pool. Junie can plan, write, test, and self-correct multi-file changes from a natural-language prompt, read structured plan files, and even operate in a specialized Debug mode where it attaches to a running program through the IDE debugger to inspect runtime state and manage breakpoints. Other core features include automatic Git commit message generation, automated test generation, and support for selecting different underlying agents (Junie, Claude, Codex, GitHub Copilot) directly within AI chat.

JetBrains restructured its AI offering in 2025 around a credit-based system: code completion and Next Edit Suggestions are free and don't consume credits, while chat, code generation, and agentic features like Junie draw from a monthly quota. Enterprise customers get zero-data-retention policies with cloud model providers and the ability to enforce .aiignore files, preventing sensitive proprietary code from ever being processed externally, making the platform attractive to regulated industries like finance and healthcare. JetBrains, founded in 2000 and based in Prague, has built its AI Assistant and Junie agent on decades of static-analysis expertise underlying its widely used IDE lineup, first introducing AI Assistant in December 2023 and significantly expanding it with Junie and Claude Agent SDK integration through 2025 and 2026.

JetBrains AI offers four tiers. AI Free is $0/month with 3 AI credits every 30 days, unlimited code completion via JetBrains' Mellum model, and local model support via Ollama or LM Studio, but excludes frontier models and Junie for sustained agentic work. AI Pro is $10/month (Individual) or $20/month (Business), with 10 AI credits per month. AI Ultimate is $30/month (Individual) or $60/month (Business), with 35 AI credits per month, including a $5 bonus over the plan price. AI Enterprise is custom-priced at roughly $60/user/month billed annually, adding organization-wide credit pooling and enterprise controls. Each AI Credit equals $1 USD, and unused top-up credits (purchased separately at $1 each) remain valid for 12 months, while unused monthly plan credits do not roll over. A 30-day AI Pro trial is available for new users. AI Pro is also bundled into JetBrains' All Products Pack and dotUltimate subscriptions.
